Shadow Figures
In the shadow ‘Figure’ images, the landscape and the figure are indivisible; the figure is in the landscape and the landscape is in the figure. Most of these images were made in the early 2000s, but the theme of co-relationship between figure and landscape continues into to my current work at the centre of which is a consideration of the way our culture has drifted away from understanding itself as part of an ecosystem, towards the assumption that natural resources are there for our ab/use.
The shadow ‘Series’ images are about the Earth’s daily rotation. On a sunny day, at different times of year, I would mark a spot in a field or lane and return there throughout the day to take photos of my waving shadow. I was in the same place – but the earth had rotated, causing the changes in the appearance of colour and texture of the land. Similar to the Rain Drawings and Wind Drawings in a previous section; I could make a decision about where to stand, how often to return and how many photos to take, but the changes in the appearance of the were the ‘unpredictable variable, caused in these images by the Earth’s rotation.
The shadow figure also appears in my video 'Another April' (2017). To see the video click here.
